Plot location: In large slough just west of gas pipeline right-of-way, SW of golf course at Algonkian Regional Park.
Hummock and hollow microtopography.
Habitat is a seasonally flooded slough on a very broad (0.7 miles wide) floodplain terrace of the Potomac River. Based on water marks on trees, maximum flooding depth is relatively shallow, about 20 cm above the hollow bottoms. Soils appear to be clay-rich and probably impede damage. Most of this habitat at Algonkian Regional Park has been disturbed and supports young forests dominated by Acer rubrum. This plot is located in an older, less disturbed fragment that has significant overstory cover by the hydrophytic oaks Quercus palustris and Quercus bicolor; large specimens up to ca. 1.0 m DBH are scattered through the slough. The sedges Carex louisianica and Carex typhina are Coastal Plain outliers.
